Although summer is the best time of year for construction, with fewer weather-related obstacles to worry about, there is still plenty of work getting done during the long winter months. The older I get, the harder I find it to stay warm in winter, indoors or out. The leaves are changing color, school is back in session and the temperatures are getting a little chillier. All of these are signs that fall is here and winter cold is only a month or so away. For most of us, fall means pumpkin everything, sweaters every day and the return of our favorite shows on network television.

For those in the construction field, it means cold weather dangers and can be a contributing factor in construction site accidents. Outdoor workers have a particular interest in putting winter weather behind them as freezing temperatures, ice and snow all combine to make conditions at their workplace more uncomfortable as well as hazardous.

If you work indoors at an office job like some of us do, you probably aren’t too affected by the weather. But as a construction worker, you need to be prepared for all elements. Given that construction projects continue regardless of rain or shine, having the right equipment is crucial to getting the job done and keeping comfortable all day long.

Here are some of NYC Shanties recommendations for products that will keep you warm and dry during your winter construction projects:

  1. Patagonia Men’s Merino Daily Boxer Briefs

The Bosses Favorite: Performance boxer briefs made of moisture-wicking, recycled nylon/spandex stretch micromesh fabric for high-output activities work and travel.

2. Smartwool NTS Mid 250 Crew

When it’s freezing out, it’s not enough to wear your normal clothes. You need a good base layer. This one was voted best in class by Outdoor Gear Lab.

  1. Patagonia Insulated Powder Bowl Pants

These pants are constructed with two-layer Gore-Tex fabric for warmth and waterproof protection. Plus, they come in black, green and navy. In addition to bright orange.

  1. Carhartt Extremes Cold Weather Boot Sock

Everyone has a couple of pairs: These are maybe the best socks on the planet, warmth-wise. You know those construction workers building condos and skyscrapers in February? A lot of them are wearing these.

  1. Kbethos Winter Trooper Cap

Nothing says “King of Winter” like the hat that Walter Matthau rocked in Grumpy Old Men.

And as of this moment, I’m happy to share these measures I’ve found helpful with you, just short of moving to a condo on the beach in  South Florida. You don’t have to be a senior citizen to succumb to the known hazards of winter weather. With bitterly cold weather emerging during this time of year, those who work in blustery winter conditions can be in danger if not protected. We here at NYC Shanty ask that you stay warm by taking the necessary precautions when you know cold weather is on its way.
